The Gift of the Holy Ghost

Mormon Gift Holy Ghost

Mormonism teaches that the Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead.  The Holy Ghost is a spirit and does not have a body of flesh and bones, as do God the Father and Jesus Christ.  Although he can be in only one place at a time, his influence can be everywhere.  The purpose of the Holy Ghost is to bear witness of Jesus Christ and of all truth.  He is also a purifier, making us worthy to return to the presence of God.

In Mormonism, there is a distinction between the Holy Ghost and the gift of the Holy Ghost.  The gift of the Holy Ghost is a phrase used by Mormons to refer to the second ordinance of the gospel, after baptism.  A person may receive this gift when he has been baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ.  This gift is the privilege of having the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost to guide, direct, inspire, and teach us.  The influence of the Holy Ghost may be felt without having received the gift of the Holy Ghost. It is one of the promises of the Book of Mormon, that the Holy Ghost will manifest its truth to whomever sincerely prays to know, but this gift is temporary.  The Holy Ghost can inspire or influence anyone, but, after receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, a worthy individual can enjoy this influence every moment of their lives.

The Holy Ghost is bestowed upon those who have been baptized and confirmed members of the Mormon Church.  Those who have been ordained as Elders in the Church have the authority to give the Holy Ghost to anyone who qualifies.  This is done by the laying on of hands.  A few Elders place their hands on the person’s head and one of them offers a prayer in which he admonishes the person to receive the Holy Ghost.  Receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost does not guarantee its companionship.  We must live worthily in order to enjoy the blessings.  The Holy Ghost will not dwell in unclean places and will not force himself where he is not wanted.  We must keep our hearts and minds undefiled and invite the Holy Ghost into our lives.

Mormonism teaches that the gift of the Holy Ghost, given by the Elders of the Church, is one of God’s greatest gifts.  He is a revealer of truth.  Only through the Holy Ghost can anyone know that Jesus is the Christ.   And all things can be known through him.  The Holy Ghost is a comforter.  He will give peace and understanding to the soul.  The Holy Ghost will sanctify us to become worthy to enter Heaven.  The Holy Ghost is a guide.  He will give us promptings to guide our actions and in all ways help us act in accordance with the will of our Heavenly Father.
